NOVENA TO SAINT MICHAEL AND THE ANGELS

First Day of the Novena

Kneeling in front of an altar, or an icon of Saint Michael, make the sign of the Cross and give thanks to God for all His benefits and the benefits that He has made to St. Michael. Offer to the greater glory of God, the honor of Most Holy Mary, and the honor of Saint Michael, and all the Angels, your actions, words and thoughts. Then make an Act of Contrition.

Act of Contrition

My dearest Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, my Creator and Redeemer, because you are who you are, and because I love you above all things, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I firmly intend never to sin again, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin, and to confess and to do the penance imposed upon me; and I offer my life, my work, and my labors to the satisfaction of all my sins. And as I beseech you, so I trust in your goodness and infinite mercy to forgive me, for the merits of your Blood and Passion, and I trust that you will give me the grace to make amends and to persevere until death. Amen.

Prayer

O Sovereign Archangel, O most excellent Prince of the Heavenly Court! Who would not be very devoted to you from this day on, if you favor your devotees so much? Who will not serve you with much care, if such is the way you pay the services they do for you? But for me to love you, it is enough to know the love that you have for me, a love too high to be able to correspond to it properly. It is not necessary to promise me new favors to serve you; your past favors oblige me because I cannot even begin to appreciate how much you have done for me and I know that I cannot ever repay you. But since I cannot correspond to so many favors with works, receive words and affections. Thank you, O lord, and sublime spirit, for you have defended the honor and glory of my Lord Jesus Christ, and for all the services you have done to him and his most Holy Mother. Thank you, for the Angel that you have assigned to my guard, and for the other general and particular benefits that you have done for me by yourself or through your Angels. So many benefits that I cannot even comprehend them in this life, nor can I gratefully acknowledge them; and so I ask my Guardian Angel, I implore him to thank you in my name for your favors, along with the favors you have done to all humankind, and especially to the Holy Church, of which I am a member. I enjoy all the privileges, graces, prerogatives, dignities, and natural and supernatural gifts with which the Lord has honored and enriched us. And I give the Lord eternal thanks for them, because He wanted to exalt you, and made you his Private Minister and his favorite among all the Angels: defend me, O most courageous Captain of the Armies of God, send your soldiers to my help, to defend me from the demons, and do not let me surrender to their combats and temptations. Send to me your angels to guide me so that I may not go wrong; to enlighten me, so that I may not walk blindly and to place their hands so that my feet do not stumble on the dangerous paths of this life. Assist me with your Angels at my hour of death, and attain that I feel true contrition for my sins, so that when my soul stands before your Court, I deserve to be presented by your hands before the Throne of the Holy Trinity, and attain the Glory of Heaven, where I will praise the Lord forever, and I will give you thanks perpetually for having obtained through your intercession the Everlasting Bliss. Amen.

First Day

God, and Lord of the Angels, to whom you entrust the guardianship of men; I offer you the merits of these Sovereign Spirits, and the merits of the Prince of Angels St. Michael, who by himself and through his ministers guards humankind, so that You may guard me from all sin with angelic purity: and grant me what I ask in this Novena for your greater honor and glory. Amen.

Here recite the Our Father and Ave Maria nine times, in reverence of the nine Choirs of the Angels and in reverence of their Leader Saint Michael, to whom the commemoration prayer is said:

Princeps gloriosisime Michael Coelestium exercituum, susceptor animarum, debellator malorum spirituum, Civis Dei, post Christus Dux admirabilis, grandis exellentiae & virturi; omnes nos clamantes ad te ab omnia libera adversitate & in Domini cultu facias proficere, tuo pretioso officio, & dignisima prece.

V. Ora pro nobis, Beatissime Michael, Princeps in Ecclesia Christi.
R. Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Dei. Amen.

Most glorious Prince St. Michael, Captain and Leader of the Celestial Armies, guardian and shelter of the souls, conqueror of the evil spirits; citizen of the Lord, and governor after Jesus Christ of the Church of God, and of great excellence, and virtue, deliver all those who call upon you from every adversity, and by the merit of your precious office and dignified intercession, help us advance in the service of God.

V. Pray for us Blessed Saint Michael, Prince of the Church of Christ.
R. That we may be worthy of the promises of God. Amen.

Oremus:

Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, qui saluti humanae, ex summa clementia tua, gloriosissimum Principem Ecclesiae tuae Michaelem Arcangelum mirabiliter deputati: concede, ut eius salutari subsidio, hic mereamur ab hostibus omnibus defendi & in nostro obitu liberare, tuaque excelsae maiestati beatissime praesentari. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Let us pray:

Almighty and everlasting God who through your great clemency and for the sake of the well-being of humans, has marvellously deputed the most Glorious Archangel Saint Michael as the Prince of your Church: Grant us, that through his protection we will be worthy to be defended here from all enemies, and that at the hour of our death, free and saved, we will be presented to your divine and sovereign Majesty. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Your confidence boosted by your trust in the prayers and the affection in your heart, ask Saint Michael the particular favor that you wish for and then say:

V. In conspectu Angelorum psallam tibi Deus meus.
R. Adorabo at templum Sanctum tuum, & confitebor nomini tuo.

Most Glorious Prince, Archangel Michael, remember us: here and everywhere pray always for us to the Son of God.

V. O my God, before the Angels I sing praise unto thee.
R. I worship at your Holy Temple and I give thanks to your name.

Second Day

On this day, and on all the following days of the Novena, one must do and say the same as in the first day; varying only the prayer of the Angels, which is particularly set for each one of the days. And so start with the Act of Contrition, and then the prayer which begins with: O Sovereign Archangel; and after that the prayer for the second day, which is this:

God, and Lord of the Archangels, to whom you entrust the affairs of your glory: I offer the merits of these Noble Spirits, and the merits of St. Michael the Archangel, who defended your honor and glory against Lucifer and his angels, so that I may seek in all things your greater glory, and grant me what I ask in this Novena. Amen.

For the rest of the second day, do as it was said for the first day.

Third Day

God, and Lord of the Principalities, to whom you entrust the guardianship of the Realms: I offer you the merits of these Exalted Spirits, and the merits of the Prince of the Heavenly Militia, Saint Michael, Guardian of all the Christian Kingdoms, so that you may guard the republic of my senses, and the powers of all disorder and disobedience to your divine laws, and grant me what I ask in this Novena, for your greater honor and glory. Amen.

Fourth Day

God, and Lord of the Powers, who have special power to restrain the demons: I offer you the merits of these most Powerful Spirits, and the merits of your servant Saint Michael, who reached the greatest victory over the demons and with the same pleasure he continually fights against them for the sake of men, so that you defend me from all temptations of the world, the devil, and the flesh, and grant me what I ask in this Novena, for your greater honor and glory. Amen.

Fifth Day

God, and Lord of the Virtues, by whom you perform miracles proper to your sovereign power, transcending the laws of nature to serve your glory: I offer you the merits of these Prodigious Spirits, and the merits of Saint Michael, the principal instrument of all the wonders that are made in the world, so that you may grant me to overcome the evil inclinations of my corrupted nature and to preserve and to increase your grace, and grant me what I ask in this Novena, for your greater honor and glory. Amen.

Sixth Day

God, and Lord of the Dominations, who preside over the lower Choirs, and are the ministers of your providence: I offer you the merits of these most Eminent Spirits, and the merits of your Minister Saint Michael, their superior leader in Paradise, so that you may grant me perfect lordship over my passions, and perfect obedience to all my superiors, and grant me what I ask in this Novena, for your highest honor and glory. Amen.

Seventh Day

God, and Lord of the Thrones, in whom you rest as on the Throne of your glory, and you sit as on the Court of Justice: I offer you the merits of these High Spirits, and the merits of St. Michael, Throne of your greatness, and Supreme Minister of Justice, and I ask you to grant me that I may not judge myself with rigor so that later I may be judged with pity, and that you grant me what I ask in this Novena, for your greater honor and glory. Amen.

Eighth Day

God, and Lord of the Cherubim, who are adorned with perfect wisdom: I offer you the merits of these Wisdom Spirits, and the merits of Saint Michael, Prince of the Sages of Heaven, through whom you teach your Church the truths she needs to know, so that you teach me to fear and love you, which is the same wisdom, and grant me what I ask in this Novena, for your greater honor and glory. Amen.

Ninth Day

God, and Lord of the Seraphim, who burn in the flames of your love: I offer you the merits of these Ardent Spirits, and the merits of your beloved and lover Saint Michael, so that I may love you, the only God, my Lord, above all things, with all my soul, with all my heart, and with all my strength and grant me what I ask in this Novena, for your greater honor and glory. Amen.

On one of the days of the Novena you should go to confession and communion with the greatest preparation and disposition possible; and it will be good to fast one day in honor of St. Michael, which could be the Friday that falls in the discourse of the Novena. And whoever performs the novena should try to compel the Angels with a great purity of body and soul, walking all the nine days with special care to avoid all faults, in particular those contrary to chastity, which is an Angelic virtue. Anyone who does this and also gives alms, and does other good works in reverence of the Sovereign Spirits, will oblige them to intercede with God to reach what is desired, if it suits his salvation; and if not, they will obtain from His Majesty something better and more suitable for the Everlasting Bliss.

Although we can perform this Novena at any time of the year, when we need and wish to obtain a favor from Saint Michael, it is pleasing to the holy Archangel, besides these occasions, to dispose ourselves with this devotion for the Feast of his Apparition, which is celebrated May 8, beginning on April 30, and finishing it on the day of the Apparition; and for the Feast of his Dedication, which is September 29, and beginning on the 21st of this month, and ending the day of the Dedication. Or celebrate the two feasts with the Novena, beginning on the eve of the feast and ending eight days later.
